Ready, Set...and Sniff

Introduction to AKC Scent Work will cover the basics of trialing in AKC Scent Work as well as giving participants the opportunity to have beginner scent work sessions with their dogs.  The focus of the workshop is to give handler and dogs who have had little or no prior experience in scent work a sneak peak of what it is all about.  Hands-on training session will focus on ways to start training your canine companion to be successful in scent work.  If time allows, more advanced scent work demos will be performed to demonstrate handling strategies for the higher levels.

Requirements: Working-spot participants will need a buckle collar and 6’ foot leash for their dog.  Also bring “high value” treats for your dog and one box- approx.. 8” x 10” in size- approx.. 3”-6” deep.

Presenter- Becky Feigh has had a passion for dogs training dogs starting in 4H with her Bassett Hound.  Twenty-six years ago she got her first German Shorthaired Pointer and her love for the breed has not wavered.  The desire to train and to help others to learn led her to become involved in her local county  4H Dog Project where she was an instructor for 20 years.  She is also currently serving her 5th  year on the Board of Directors for the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America.  Becky along with her Shorthairs have participated in AKC conformation, hunt tests, obedience, rally, dock diving, Fast Cat, Lure Coursing Ability and more recently AKC Scent Work. In November 2021 Becky and her GSP named Gizmo became the first GSP to earn his Scent Work Master Elite (SCME) title and only the 18th dog since AKC Scent work trials started in September of 2017.  The team entered their first AKC Scent work trial in October of 2019 and never looked back  To date Gizmo has earned 34 AKC Scent Work titles with 116 qualifying runs along with 97 class placements along the way.  Next challenge for the team is working towards earning the Detective title.
